About Maine DSA
What is Socialism?
Socialism is a type of society that uses the surplus value created by workers to satisfy human need instead of as profits for bosses. As democratic socialists, we believe this goal can only be achieved if all people are able to participate meaningfully in those decisions that will influence their lives.
About the Democratic Socialists of America
The Democratic Socialists of America is the largest socialist organization in the United States, with over 87,000 members and chapters in all 50 states. We are a political and activist organization, not a political party. DSA members use a variety of tactics, from legislative to direct action, to fight for reforms that empower working people.
The work we do as a chapter is decided on and organized by members, not by wealthy donors, any political party, or board of directors.
About Maine DSA
Maine DSA is the only DSA chapter in Maine. Our chapter primarily organizes in the Portland Metropolitan area, although our campaigns and projects may operate statewide and our membership draws from every county in the state.
We welcome all who have anti-racist, anti-fascist, and anti-capitalist ideologies. We are not a charity; our focus is on developing leadership within the working class to organize and fight for the working class. Organizing means listening more than talking, forming relationships with those in our community, and building power with each other to change the world.
